In 2002, when we invested in Genomic Health, we decided that the tools of genomics and proteomics, which were providing new avenues for drug discovery, could also be used to understand disease on a molecular rather than purely anatomical basis.
Since that time, we have strengthened our belief that companies can use this molecular understanding to diagnose patients on a more granular level, providing information which not only discriminates pathology, but can also provide actionable information allowing patients and physicians to make better decisions about future prognosis and treatment.
Our approach is to identify the key clinical question which a medical care team is trying to answer, understand the clinical samples that are available to inform on this decision and apply whichever tools and techniques provide the best resolution. We believe that clinical data is essential to the development, validation and adoption of such diagnostic tests. We partner with talented management teams that blend therapeutic and diagnostic experience to bring these products to the patient and their physician.
